Planetary Management NOW

The Primary Instigators

The primary instigators of this project are Bruce Small and Howard Rubin, principals of Small & Rubin Ltd. and Technology and Health Foundation. We want company in this project. The world needs a dense network of instigators who will take action, step by step, to educate and inspire people, to create and maintain networks, and to provoke unprecedented creativity in weaving together the human beings on this planet. Our goal is to help people around the world connect in a co-operative and proactive way to ensure both our survival as a species and the survival of the complex ecosystem and web of life on this planet that we have inherited, and must also pass on to future generations.

Bruce M. Small has a long history in the business of world change. He has been an inspiring writer and public speaker for over forty years. He is especially known for being able to question respectfully our cherished and established views and to challenge conventional wisdom on almost any front. As an engineering physicist, he knows the difference between fact and fancy. As an environmental researcher, he has worked on the question of planetary survival throughout his career and has a deep and keen understanding of what will lead us to better order in the world. As a professional life script coach, he is sensitive to people's real and immediate needs, and expert at anticipating our fears and insecurities to give us the boost we need to get over them and move on to working on important tasks that will benefit everyone.

Howard Rubin is a man of real life experience - as an entrepreneur, as a father, and as a son of holocaust survivors with a family tree full of holes. He never hesitates to make direct contact with other human beings. He makes friends wherever he goes. He has bounced his way through economic recessions and personal challenges with a level of ingenuity that will always guarantee his survival. He is equally comfortable underneath a car, inside the back of a computer, wielding a spatula in the kitchen, and making important connections for managing the entire planet. To him, technology is a tool to get what you want and people are for getting to know.

Together, Bruce and Howard represent a seasoned team who have worked together for over twenty years. Their track record as instigators is extensive. It first started in the early 1970s when Bruce abandoned a potential acadamic career in theoretical physics to enrol in a design science course in Southern Illinois set up by Buckminster Fuller. In Bruce's Master's Thesis he applied the thermodynamics of open systems to planetary management, and began a trail of thinking that has brought him to this point today.

Bruce was one of the early Canadian pioneers in the field of indoor air quality, and he established a research centre for supporting individuals whose health had been badly affected by pollution. He created awareness of indoor air quality effects on education, through studies with the (then) Toronto Board of Education in the mid-1980s. When Howard joined the team in 1990 they together founded the Envirodesic Certification Program, which for twenty years has promoted the use of healthier building materials in construction around the world, and has heralded the introduction of totally new and nonvolatile cleaning technologies.

On the charitable front, Bruce and Howard worked with the Ontario Lung Association to help establish that organization's expertise and ongoing web presence in indoor air quality and health. They also worked with Pollution Probe to research the literature on molds and their health effects, and together with them helped to pioneer the database website HealthySchools.com to distribute information on indoor air and health in education. Through the Foundation for Independent Research on Technology and Health they have researched and developed the concept of 'candleholder networks' (Committed Action Networks with Distributed Leadership Environment) that involve large numbers of people through internet communications.

On the industrial side, Bruce and Howard have arranged and delivered lectures to architects throughout North America to promote healthier methods of building design and construction in the context of sustainable green buildings.

In the education system, they are now promoting the use of the latest brain development research to assist the growth of childrens' internal neural networks, through integrated body movement within the regular academic classroom.

Now returning to their roots, Bruce and Howard figured that the world just isn't going to make it if we continue to proceed at a snail's pace governed by immediate political and economic imperatives. They are designing a grassroots revolution that will finally involve as many well-meaning people as possible in the business of world change. Tired of the classical approach, which tended to exclude non-academics, Bruce and Howard seek support for the kind of brave and diverse thinking that it will take to really turn this planet around.

We are seeking partners and participants who can grasp the importance of developing the world's abilities in planetary management - now, not forty years from now. If you are interested in funding us or joining us, please contact Howard (see Contact Us above) to discuss the concept and what kind of support or participation you can offer. We have both corporate and charitable vehicles that are capable of handling funding.
